San Francisco's Conservatory of Flowers

October 08th 2005 - The Conservatory of Flowers is a spectacular living museum of very rare and beautiful tropical plants. Including different species of palms, orchids, bromelias, carnivorous plants and much more. Prominently situated near the eastern end of Golden Gate Park. It was a landmark since 1878.

San Francisco Alcatraz Penitentiary














October 09th 2005
This is Alcatraz. A small rocky Island in the middle of the bay. Alcatraz has a checkered history that began long before it became a federal penitentiary. In 1934 Alcatraz was turned into a maximum security prison. Officially there were no succesful escapes.

October 08th 2005 - This is San Francisco crokedest street, the Lomabrd Street. This steep, hilly street was designed with very sharp curves to switchback down the one-way hill past gorgeous Victorian houses. The street is paved with beautiful red bricks and it is an amazing site to visit.

San Francisco Cable Car

October 08th 2005 - This is the famous San Francisco moving landmark, the Cable Car. They provide exciting trips up and down some of the city's steepest hills at steady speed of 9.5 mph. Two cable cars run from Market Street & Powell to Fisherman's Wharf. One car purchase tickets at self-service machines, kiosks or just pay the conductor on board.

San Francisco Chinatown














October 08th 2005 - This is San Francisco's Chinatown Entrance, the Dragon Gate. Located at Bush and Grant Streets. It was a gift to San Francisco from the Republic of China in 1969. Home to one of the North America's largest Chinese communities. The streets are lined with restaurants and shops offering a wide variety of colorful merchandise. Posted by Picasa

San Francisco Trip














October 07 2005 - Kerry had two-way WestJet buddy passes for 4 people and we all decided to go to San Francisco for the Canadian Thanksgiving long-weekend. The trip was unpredictable, because we were in the waiting list, but in the end everything turned out to be just perfect! The weather was gorgeous (between 21C to 25C) and we had a lot of fun! Posted by Picasa

Biodiversidade Brasileira

"Diversidade biológica" significa a variabilidade de organismos vivos de todas as origens, compreendendo, dentre outros, os ecossistemas terrestres, marinhos e outros ecossistemas aquáticos e os complexos ecológicos de que fazem parte; compreendendo ainda a diversidade dentro de espécies, entre espécies e de ecossistemas. (Artigo 2 da Convenção sobre Diversidade Biológica)
Biodiversidade Brasileira - Em solo brasileiro estão seis ecossistemas, entre eles a maior floresta tropical do mundo, a Amazônica. Em cada quarteirão da mata encontram-se de 100 a 300 espécies de plantas. Um gigantesco laboratório da Natureza que garante ao Brasil participar do time de países megadiversos - que são aqueles que detêm as maiores e mais preservadas diversidades biológicas da Terra.Para completar nossa multiplicidade, em terras brasileiras vivem pessoas dos cinco continentes que se uniram aos mais de 350 diferentes povos indígenas que aqui estavam quando o Brasil foi descoberto.Grande parte desses imigrantes escolheu morar na costa, de frente para o mar. Assim, grandes cidades se formaram no litoral e, por muitos séculos, nós esquecemos um pouco do nosso interior. Lá, a alma do povo brasileiro se guardou. Ao lado da mata e do sertão, as chamadas populações tradicionais puderam cultivar a terra como quem cultiva a si mesmo.É com esses homens e mulheres - que sempre viveram da terra e com a terra - que temos muito o que aprender. Aprender os segredos das plantas, aprender a respeitar os animais e a conservar o que ainda resta do patrimônio natural brasileiro.A riqueza de vida no Brasil vem sendo seriamente ameaçada. A Mata Atlântica, que se alongava por toda a costa, hoje está reduzida a menos de 7% de seu tamanho original. Do Cerrado resta um pouco mais da metade, e a Amazônia também vem perdendo rapidamente suas florestas.
